কানাডা ও বাংলাদেশের বন্ধুত্বের সুসম্পর্ক ৫০ বছর উত্তীর্ণ । ভালো বন্ধু রাষ্ট্র, হিসেবে বাংলাদেশ-কানাডা এই সর্ম্পক চিরকাল অটুট থাকবে সেটাই আমাদের উভয় দেশের কাম্য। দীর্ঘ সময় ৫০ বছরের বন্ধুত্বের সর্ম্পক ধরে আমরা উভয়ের আর্থ সামাজিক, শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতি, স্বাস্থ্য, গণতন্ত্র ও নারীর ক্ষমতায়নে উন্নয়ন কৃষ্টি কালচার আদান প্রদানে মধ্য দিয়ে উন্নয়নের পথে ধাবমান।বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে ১৯৭১ সালে তৎকালীন কানাডার প্রধানমন্ত্রী পিয়েরে টুরুডোর পার্লামেন্ট ,মিডিয়া, টরেন্টো ভার্সিটি,এনজিও ও চার্চসহ মানবাধিকার সংস্থাগুলো সোচ্চার হয়ে দাড়িয়েছিলো বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার পক্ষে।পিয়েরে টুরুডো কানাডা দুর প্রাচ্যের দেশ হয়ে প্রথম দিকে মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের সমর্থন দিতে না পারলেও শেষের দিকে বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার লক্ষ্যে সার্বিক সহযোগীতা করেন।
১৯৭১ সালে ১৬ই ডিসেম্বর বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা ঘোষণা করেন, কানাডা ১৯৭২ সালে ফেব্রুয়ারীতে বাংলাদেশকে স্বীকৃতি দান করেন ।পিয়েরে টুরুডো যুদ্ধকালীন সময়ে কানাডিয়ান পার্ললামেন্টে পাকিস্তানীদের বর্বরতার নিন্দা প্রস্তাব এনেছিলের এবং শরর্ণণার্থীদের জন্য ত্রণ পাঠিয়েছিলেন।কানাডা সরকার সেই সময়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী পিয়েরে ট্রুডোর নেতৃত্বে মানবিক ও কূটনৈতিক উভয় স্তরেই বাংলাদেশিদের সহায়তা করতে অনেক বেশি আগ্রহী ছিল। শুধু যুদ্ধকালীনই নয়,যুদ্ধের পরেও কানাডা সরকার আশ্রয় দিয়েছে বেশকিছু যুদ্ধ শিশুকে। যারা এখনও কানাডায় বসবাস করছে এবং তাদের মধ্যে একজন কানাডিয়ান ইমিগ্রেশনের উচ্চ পদে কর্মরত আরেকজন চিত্র পরিচালক যিনি বিশ্বের সবচেয় মর্মস্পর্শী “ওয়াল্ড চাইল্ড” ছবির নির্মাতা। মুক্তিযুদ্ধকালীন এবং তার পরবর্তী কানাডা ও কানাডিয়ানদের ভূমিকা চিরস্মরনীয়,যে বন্ধুত্ব আজও চলামান। পিয়েরে টুরুডো থেকে জাস্টিন টুরুডো ও বাংলাদেশ।
বাংলাদেশের মুক্তিযুদ্ধে বিশেষ অবদানের স্বীকৃতি হিসেবে কানাডার সাবেক প্রধানমন্ত্রী পিয়েরে ট্রুডোকে মরণোত্তর ‘বাংলাদেশ মুক্তিযুদ্ধ সম্মাননা’ দেওয়া হয়েছে। সাবেক এই প্রধানমন্ত্রীর ছেলে দেশটির বর্তমান প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাস্টিন ট্রুডোর হাতে এই সম্মাননা তুলে দেন বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা।
বর্তমান কানাডার প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাস্টিন টুরুডো হলেন ১৯৭১ সালে বাংলাদেশের পরম বন্ধু প্রতিম যুদ্ধকালীন সহযোগী কানাডার তৎকালীন প্রধানমন্ত্রী পিয়েরে টুরুডোর সন্তান। যার জন্মই ১৯৭১ সালে ২৩ জুলাই। তিনি তার বাবার সাথে ১৯৮৩ সালে বাংলাদেশ সফরে আসেন। তখন তার এক সাক্ষৎকারে বলেন-“আমি সব সময়ই গর্ববোধ করি বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতা যুদ্ধে প্রথম দিকে বিশ্বের অল্প যে কটি দেশ স্বাধীনতার স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছিলো তাদের মধ্যে কানাডা একটি”। জাস্টিন টুরুডো দুইবার এমপি নির্বাচিত হন। তিনি মন্ট্রিয়লের প্যাপিনো আসনে নির্বাচন করেন সেখানে বাংলাদেশী কানাডিয়ানরা তাকে বিপুল ভোটে বিজয় করায় তিনি বাংলাদেশীদের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করেন।কানাডা বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে ধনী দেশগুলির একটি। দেশটি অর্গানাইজেশন ফর ইকোনমিক কোঅপারেশন অ্যান্ড ডেভেলপমেন্ট (ওইসিডি) এবং জি-৮ গ্রুপের সদস্য। অন্যান্য উন্নতদেশগুলির মত কানাডার অর্থনীতির সিংহভাগ সেবামূলক শিল্প নিয়ে গঠিত। প্রায় তিন চতুর্থাংশ কানাডাবাসী কোন না কোন সেবা শিল্পের সাথে যুক্ত আছেন।কানাডা বিশ্বে একটি উদারপন্থী রাষ্ট্র।কানাডায় রয়েছে ১০টি প্রদেশ ও ৩টি টেরিটরি। বর্ততমানে কানাডায় লক্ষাধিক বাংলাদেশী বসবাস করছে ।বাংলাদেশী বংশদ্ভোত অধিকাংশ নাগরিক বৃহতর টরোন্টো এলাকা এবং মন্ট্রিঅলকে কেন্দ্র করে বাস করে।
জাস্টিন টুরুডো কানাডার লিবারেল পার্টির নেতা হিসেবে ২০১৫ সালে দেশটির ২৩তম প্রধানমন্ত্রী নির্বাচিত হন। জো ক্লার্কের পর জাস্টিন টুরুডো কানাডার দ্বিতীয় কমবয়সী প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন। তার পিতা পিয়েরে টুরুডো কানাডার প্রাক্তন প্রধানমন্ত্রী ছিলেন। পিতার সুত্র ধরে পুত্র কানাডার বর্তমান প্রধানমন্ত্রী জাস্টিন টুরুডো ও বাংলাদেশর বন্ধুপ্রতিম হয়ে আজও সুসম্পর্ক বজায় রেখে চলছে যেটা আমাদের জন্য গর্ব ও গৌরবের। আগামী দিনগুলো বাংলাদেশ ও কানাডার সম্প্রীতির বন্ধন আরও সুদৃঢ হোক টুরুডোর প্রধানমন্ত্রীত্ব ও রজনৈতিক জীবন হোক বিশ্বনন্দিন সে প্রত্যাশাই আমাদের।

50 years have passed since the good relations between Canada and Bangladesh. As a good friend, Bangladesh-Canada relationship will remain intact forever, which is the wish of both our countries.After a long friendship of 50 years, we have been moving towards development through the exchange of socio-economic, educational, cultural, health, democratic and women’s empowerment.
